We are the Superstition ARC, founded back in 1973. So why do we not use SARC?
Good questions deserve good answers! There is already a SARC in the valley, the Scottsdale ARC, founded back in 1967. As a member of the Superstition club since March 1976, and a member of its governing Board in years past, I have sought a short identity unique to our club.
When I was the trustee of our club station call sign, WB7TJD, a case in point came up. I noticed that the Arizona repeater directory listed a SARC with a pair of repeaters and a SARC, Inc. with another pair of repeaters.
Which club is which, one might ask. Limited in the amount of space I could use for a club name in the directory, I went with “SuperARC” after conferring with others – short for Superstition ARC.
I would like to see the Superstition ARC not compete with Scottsdale for name recognition by also using Scottsdale’s short name. It would be best to avoid the four letters altogether.
My first idea was to use SSARC – SuperStition ARC. That idea didn’t catch on, but the SuperARC shorthand does identify us with a super name.
Speaking of WB7TJD, above, reminds me: We used to serve doughnuts at our meetings. Tasty jelly doughnuts were brought in on occasion, too.
That’s right: We Bought 7 Tasty Jelly Doughnuts!
