Superstition Amateur Radio Club Reaches for the Stars with Student ISS Contact
The Superstition Amateur Radio Club (SuperARC) is bringing space a little closer to home—and inspiring the next generation of explorers in the process.
In partnership with ASU Prep Polytechnic Academy in Mesa, Arizona, SuperARC is supporting an unforgettable milestone: a live radio contact between local students and an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Dress Rehearsal: Mission Training Underway
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, excitement filled the air as members of the SuperARC ARISS (Amateur Radio on the ISS) contact team conducted a full dress rehearsal on campus.
Ten selected students—along with two alternates—stepped up to the microphone, practicing the questions they will soon ask an astronaut orbiting hundreds of miles above Earth. For many, it was their first experience speaking over amateur radio, and the energy was electric.
The rehearsal gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the impressive technology required to make space communication possible. They met the SuperARC team, explored the radio equipment, and sharpened their on-air speaking skills.
Taking on the role of astronaut for the day, Ed (K7EDT) simulated the ISS contact via simplex radio, responding to all 20 primary and 4 alternate questions. His performance helped bring realism—and excitement—to the practice session.
Full-Scale Simulation: Ready for Launch
Momentum continued to build during a full-scale practice on Saturday, March 21, where the team operated both primary and backup RF stations, complete with full audio/visual and live-streaming capabilities.
Students delivered their questions in a realistic environment while “Astronaut” Ed provided real-time coaching—offering guidance on voice projection, pacing, and delivery to ensure each student shines during the actual contact.
The result? A confident, prepared team of young communicators ready for their moment with space.
The Big Day Is Almost Here
Now, the countdown begins.
The ARISS contact is officially scheduled, and soon these students will speak directly with an astronaut aboard the ISS—an experience few ever get in a lifetime.
